Barn Essentials That Keep This Farm Mom Sane (Baby on Hip, Horses at the Gate)

Life at the barn looks a little different when you are juggling a daughter, three dogs, and two horses on a small property. There is the beauty of slow mornings and soft nickers and the kind of peace you can only find in a barn. There is also the chaos of spilled grain, tangled hoses, surprise mud, and the constant feeling that you need three more hands than you actually have. Over time I have learned that the right tools make everything smoother. They save time, protect my sanity, and help me enjoy the moments that matter.

Below are the barn items we reach for every single day. They are not fancy. They are not aesthetic for the sake of being aesthetic. They are simply the things that make barn life with a baby doable and even enjoyable.

Before we jump in, a quick note. This post contains Amazon Affiliate links and Chewy Creator links. This means I may earn a small commission if you purchase through them at no extra cost to you. Thank you for supporting our little farm family. At the bottom of this post you will find direct links to my full Amazon barn staples list and my Chewy storefront so you can browse everything in one place.

  • The Arlo LTE Camera That Gives Me Peace of Mind: We do not have WiFi at the barn which used to make checking on the horses a challenge. The Arlo LTE camera changed everything. It runs on LTE so it works anywhere on our property. It gives us clear HD day and night vision and it is incredibly easy to install. I can check on the horses from the house or while feeding my daughter or even when we are away. It feels like having an extra set of eyes and that peace of mind is priceless.

  • The Large Opening Hanging Feed Bucket Our Draft Horses Love: Draft horses have big heads and big appetites. Not every bucket works for them. This large opening hanging feed bucket is perfect because they can easily get their noses in without frustration. It hangs securely and it cleans up quickly. It is one of those simple items that makes feeding time smoother for everyone.

  • The Hose Combo That Saves My Back: I never expected to have strong opinions about hoses but here we are. A lightweight non kinking hose is my go to for most of the year. It is easy to drag around even with my daughter on my hip. When winter hits I switch to an expandable hose because frozen hoses are the enemy of joy. Together they make water chores manageable in every season.

  • Solar and USB Rechargeable Lights Since We Have No Electricity: Our barn does not have electricity which used to make nighttime checks tricky. Solar and USB rechargeable lights have been a lifesaver. They charge during the day or through a portable battery and they are bright enough to light up the whole aisle. They make late night feedings and unexpected emergencies so much easier.

  • Shower Caps for Feed Buckets Because Mice Are Sneaky: This one makes me laugh because it is so simple but so effective. I use shower caps to cover feed buckets when I am soaking grain between meals. They keep out mice, bugs, dust, and curious noses. They are cheap, easy, and surprisingly helpful.

  • The HayChix Easy Up Feeder That Works One Handed: When you are holding your daughter in one arm and trying to hang hay with the other, you quickly learn which products are actually mom friendly. The HayChix Easy Up Feeder is one of my favorites because I can hang it with one hand. It is quick, durable, and safe for the horses. It is a small thing that makes a big difference.

  • The Swurfer Swing That Keeps My Daughter Happy and Safe: This might be my favorite barn hack. The Swurfer swing lets my daughter stay entertained and safe while I get things done. She loves the gentle motion and I love having two free hands for a few precious minutes. It has become part of our daily barn rhythm.

  • Our Manure Spreader That Keeps the Property Clean: On a small property manure can build up quickly. Our newer manure spreader helps keep the barn area clean and turns waste into fertilizer. It also helps reduce flies which is a huge win. It is not glamorous but it is one of the most important tools we own.

  • Comforter Storage Bags That Double as Horse Blanket Bags: These comforter storage bags are perfect for organizing horse blankets. They are durable, easy to carry, and keep everything clean and contained. They make seasonal blanket storage so much easier and they stack neatly in the tack room.

  • Insulated Water Bucket Covers That Save My Winter Sanity: If you have ever spent a winter breaking ice out of buckets you know how exhausting it is. Insulated bucket covers help keep the water from freezing so you are not out there with a hammer every morning. They save time and energy and make winter chores much more manageable.

  • The Barn Bell That Brings the Horses Running: Yes, we have a bell at the barn. Yes, the horses come when they hear it. It is adorable and practical, and it makes calling them in so much easier. It has become one of those little traditions that makes our barn feel like home.

Why These Items Matter

Barn life with a daughter is beautiful and chaotic and full of tiny moments that make it all worth it. These tools help us stay organized, save time, keep everyone safe, and enjoy the barn instead of rushing through it. They are the behind the scenes heroes that keep our little farm running smoothly.

If you are juggling motherhood, animals, and a barn of your own, I hope this list gives you a few ideas that make your days a little easier too.
