No one really prepares you for what it feels like to walk through your front door after having a baby. You’re exhausted, emotional, sore in places you didn’t know could be sore, and suddenly responsible for a tiny human who needs you around the clock. It’s beautiful and overwhelming and messy and magical all at once.

And while you absolutely do not need every product the internet tries to sell you, there are a handful of things that make those first days and weeks so much more manageable. These are the items that helped me feel human again, stay comfortable, and adjust to the new normal without losing my mind.

Here’s my honest, simple, real‑life list of postpartum essentials for coming home after delivery. Check out my New Mom Essentials list. (As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.)

Comfort and Healing Essentials

Breastfeeding and Pumping Essentials

  • Silver Nipple Covers: These were a game changer for healing and comfort. If you plan to breastfeed, they are worth every penny.

  • Hospital Grade Pump: A strong pump makes a huge difference in supply and comfort. I will talk more about pumps in another post, but having a good one from the start is incredibly helpful. After much trial and error, I found that the Spectra S1 was perfect when I was first learning to pump and was a good anchor pump as it's consistent and strong, but over time, my favorite became the Pumpables Genie Advanced due to portability and the discrete-ness with the Zomee pump cups in my bra.

  • Lactation Supplements and Bars: As I struggled with consistency, Boobie bars became an easy, grab‑and‑go way to support my milk supply whenever it dipped. They were simple to work into my day and gave me a little boost when I needed it most. I also leaned on a lactation support supplement during those tougher stretches, and the combination of the two made a noticeable difference in keeping my supply steady. Legendairy Milk Sunflower Lecithin was extremely helpful too for preventing clogged ducts early on as well.

Boppy Pillow: Perfect for nursing, bottle feeding, and giving your arms a break. It also helps support your body when everything still feels tender.

Baby Gear That Makes Life Easier

  • A Good Bassinet: I love the Baby Delight Beside Me Dreamer Bassinet because it strikes the perfect balance between safe sleep and easy access. It keeps baby close enough for those middle‑of‑the‑night feeds and check‑ins, but still in their own secure space. It’s lightweight, simple to move from room to room, and the breathable mesh sides give great visibility and airflow. For those early newborn weeks, it made nights feel just a little more manageable.

  • Travel Bassinet: Look for one that’s lightweight and easy to move around the house. Being able to bring baby with you while you eat, shower, or rest is a lifesaver in those early weeks. We loved the Mompush Ultimate 2 stroller’s bassinet attachment because it was effortless to carry from room to room and set down wherever we were. Since we already had the stroller, we didn’t need to buy a separate bassinet, which made it even more convenient.

  • A Great Reclining Nursery Chair: You will spend hours feeding, rocking, and holding your baby here. Comfort matters more than anything. We also loved having a manual reclining nursery chair that swivels, rocks, and reclines. It gave me all the movement options I needed for feeding, soothing, and those long newborn snuggles, without any noisy motors or complicated buttons. The swivel‑rocker combo made late‑night shifts so much more comfortable.

  • A Baby Carrier: This is a lifesaver when you need your hands free. I will share more about carriers in another post, but having one early on helps you move around, eat, and get things done. I have multiple but found that our go-tos were the Ergobaby and the Boppy.

Food and Survival Essentials

  • Meal Delivery Service: We used Hungryroot and it was a lifesaver. The last thing you want to do is cook. Having easy meals ready to go keeps you fed and functioning.

  • Large Water Tumbler: Hydration is everything postpartum, especially if you’re breastfeeding. I love the Brumate and the HydroJug.

  • Healthy Snacks: Granola bars, fruit, nuts, yogurt, anything you can grab with one hand at 2 a.m.

Other Helpful Essentials

  • Soft Blankets and Pillows: Comfort becomes your entire personality postpartum.

  • Night Lights: Dim lighting helps with nighttime feeds without waking everyone up.

  • Extra Phone Chargers: You will lose at least one. Have backups.

  • A Small Basket of Supplies in Each Room: Think diapers, wipes, burp cloths, nipple cream, and snacks. It saves you from running around the house constantly.

Final Thoughts

Postpartum is a season unlike any other. It is raw and tender and beautiful and challenging. Having the right essentials on hand makes the transition smoother, but remember that you do not need to overbuy or overprepare. Focus on comfort, healing, nourishment, and anything that helps you feel supported.

Give yourself grace. Rest when you can. Accept help when it’s offered. And know that you are doing an incredible job, even on the days that feel impossible.
